be careful, curiosity can kill...

Posted by hugo poon (hong kong, Hong Kong) on 20 February 2010 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

Now this wall didn't only stop me...

PS. This young man did eventually go inside to check out... but I only saw him rushing out in less than 10 seconds.:-)

(Thanks to Ian's suggestion, I did a search and found the pic of the boy coming out; glad he got out in one piece! http://www.pbase.com/hpicckcy/image/122118132/original)

I do not regard myself as a photographer. I'm an ordinary man but extraordinarily obsessed with capturing all the memorable scenes that I encounter in my everyday life. It's like an excited traveller craving to record his memorable journey in a memorable way, but in my case, it's the journey of my life ... If I can record my encounters in such a way that they leave an image on the mind of myself and other viewers, it's a tremendous joy and some accomplishment...
In terms of photography, I'm trying to preserve the moments as my eyes see "something" and my heart feels it too. As such, I seldom feel interested in planned, arranged or manipulated photographs...

Fantastic shot Hugo! It sure did stop me for quite a while, reading all those lovely details! The composition, color and motion are fabulous! Great shot!

Outstanding! I wish I was there to watch this. If you managed to capture the quick exit it would make an excellent sequence?

20 Feb 2010 7:47am

@Ian Smith: Oh Ian, yes I did!:-) http://www.pbase.com/hpicckcy/image/122118132/original

k@ from Paris, France

Super story, love the boy's expectation and what you tell of him afterwards, plus this building is a book to be read, love the flower and the FHK (if i read well what it means, we have a lot of F...Paris too ;) and of course the slow shutter speed capturating the blur on the ones who slowly leave the scene. I should say the movie set ! Have a very nice week-end, my dear Hugo*

Anna.C from LA ROCHELLE, France

I love how you catched the scene ! the boy's curiosity, the motion blur of the passer by around him fand all the details to read on the old wall ! great story !

Evelyne Dubos from Le Mans, France

Great urban shot. So much details to look at (walls are a book to read as K@ says... ) and i like the intriguing attitude of the boy contrasting with the others persons who just pass without pay attention... it's their daily environment...

Ralph Jones from Detroit, United States

Great capture, of both the curiosity and the exit. What strikes me most in this photo is something very familiar to me and the city in which I reside. The flower graffiti at the top center is one I have seen here many times. The design is too close to be coincidence. Perhaps the symbol of some underground movement.

20 Feb 2010 1:43pm

@Ralph Jones: Thanks Ralph! It's wonderful, isn't it... maybe HK is an "international city"; this is not the first time we have this beautiful coincidence: here's a post a while ago, take a look at Ian's comment http://hugopoon.aminus3.com/image/2009-02-25.html

A wonderful slice of social lifestyle and urban technology. The slight movement of the passer-by's brings this shot to life.

great urban image and story Hugo...love the crop, the blurred figures with the boy in sharp focus...it all works so well...and the wild mix of concrete, grafitti, leaves, just pleasure for the soul...

I love how you captured movement in the folks along the sidewalk. There is something surreal in this image - almost like the set of a play. A very intriguing image, Hugo.

Steve Rice from Olympia, United States

A scary place for a little fellow, a big fellow to perhaps. The graffiti doesn't seem too inviting. Another great one, Hugo!
