Victoria Prison, Chancery Lane & Old Bailey Street, Central, Hong Kong

"Victoria Prison (域多利監獄), or Victoria Gaol was Hong Kong's first prison. A testimony to the evolution of Hong Kong's correctional services, it had been the centre of the local prison system until it ceased operation in December 2005. As part of the Central Police Station Compound, Victoria Prison is a declared monument of Hong Kong." Wikipedia

I do not regard myself as a photographer. I'm an ordinary man but extraordinarily obsessed with capturing all the memorable scenes that I encounter in my everyday life. It's like an excited traveller craving to record his memorable journey in a memorable way, but in my case, it's the journey of my life ... If I can record my encounters in such a way that they leave an image on the mind of myself and other viewers, it's a tremendous joy and some accomplishment...
In terms of photography, I'm trying to preserve the moments as my eyes see "something" and my heart feels it too. As such, I seldom feel interested in planned, arranged or manipulated photographs...

Great capture of this c.c.p.. Beautiful b&w and perfect atmosphere for this work

Great shot.

k@ from Paris, France

Love that he's bending as if to avoid that wire up there, dramatic B&W enhances the tension and so does his gesture with his right arm closed to i don't know what. Love the perspective. Have a super midweek, H*

I love the 'unexpected' posture of the man-in-black (or the colourful ladies in your previous post) ..which gives a little bit ironic feeling for this serious place...a great theme and composition!

Michael Fresh from Chester, United Kingdom

A relic of the British Empire, and a sad reminder of how Britain forced its rule on so many countries. This B&W shot with the prison wall is a very strong image.

very interesting image - I like it a lot

Great composition, Hugo. The figure makes all the difference to this frame. But the way you capture his running stance is marvelous!

Actually, the strands of wire have been retro-ed to a 3G network. best...jf

Like the composition here... and the choice of B&W which suits so well to this photo report and dramatic subject.

Forbidding - no wonder he's in a hurry to get away.

Hugo, really nice capture. The diagonal line of the wire on the wall, the figure, the air, as in the other image, of austerity, foreboding.... Really well done Hugo!

Steve Rice from Olympia, United States

Oh, I think he's on the right side of the wall. It's a little late to be calling for a getaway car if he's from the other side. A fine 'capture', Hugo.

Nitin from Shanghai, China

Superb capture again - brilliant composition and tones Hugo. The guy in motion to an otherwise stationery old stagnant surrounding acts like a perfect balance in the picture and makes it complete. A strong graphical feel overall too. Wonderful storytelling!

Bettina from Los Angeles, United States

Haha, he's a pretty well dressed prisoner if he's escaping. But that would be the most clever disguise, I suppose. Great shot with his rushed motion against the textures of the prison. What a fascinating place to get pictures. I like the closer view too. You can see him on his cell phone. Great shot.

Excellent photo.

I'd recognize prison clothes anywhere - that guy has come over the wall for sure and calling for a cab !

Beautiful B&W composition...simple but very effective. Great shot.

Very good profile.

Adela Fonts from Barcelona, Spain

Looking at the picture I angusta tube barbed wire that gives the impression that falls on it and that is why it is tilted. Clutching the uniform cap (I think) and talking on the phone ... Vital and active image in a frame in B / N extremely distressing ... to me this effect ... The view also influences! Best regards, Adela

RORO from LE HAVRE, France

Strange mood in this place, the limit between in and out is thin ...

23 Jul 2011 10:55am

bluechameleon from Vancouver, Canada

Wow Hugo...what fantastic lines in this shot. I love the man as a contrast against the brick wall, a modern man against something build so long ago. Excellent work and timing!
