victoria harbour & the skyscrapers...

The Larger and clearer view

2IFC on the left (Central) and ICC on the right (West Kowloon)... and they have been accommodating such most "prestigious" tenants as HK Monetary Authority, BNP Paribas, Enrst & Young, Nomura, Financial Times, Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank, Credit Suisse...

More from this tale of two buildings: "heavenly" & "sunset, harbour, city"

Central, Victoria Harbour, and West Kowloon, Hong Kong

I do not regard myself as a photographer. I'm an ordinary man but extraordinarily obsessed with capturing all the memorable scenes that I encounter in my everyday life. It's like an excited traveller craving to record his memorable journey in a memorable way, but in my case, it's the journey of my life ... If I can record my encounters in such a way that they leave an image on the mind of myself and other viewers, it's a tremendous joy and some accomplishment...
In terms of photography, I'm trying to preserve the moments as my eyes see "something" and my heart feels it too. As such, I seldom feel interested in planned, arranged or manipulated photographs...

Impressing skyscrapes...and very impressing photography in those latest pictures and in the two older entries. Wonderful and interesting...as always from you. Have a nice weekend!

A strangely expressive image which carries a sense of the character as well as the appearance of the harbor. Wishing you the best of weekends, Hugo.

Hugo, this is awesome! Your privileged vantage point, the perfect light, dramatic clouds... and all the DR and detail of the X100 - does it get any better than this?! (Thank's for the link to the larger - it really makes a difference). Looks like construction is beginning again - another new tower?

6 Aug 2011 8:15pm

@Ian Smith: Another new tower? No, just part of a massive roadwork project - The Central Wanchai Bypass & Island Eastern Corridor Link... Reclamation for commercial property development purpose is politically sensitve and has virtually come to a halt.

Giovanni from Milan, Italy

A really wonderful image, Hugo! The tones of the sky and the clouds are stunning. Excellent scale as well.

The larger version is excellent, so much sharper and vibrant. I particularly like the small ferry terminals fanning out into the harbour.

it is like tintoretto's views.... a few time later

The scale is staggering Hugo, the construction site in the foreground looks tiny in comparison to that huge dominating building, are they still called 'sky-scrapers' ?

DULCIE from Danville, CA, United States

This is breath-taking. A magnificent harbor shot...a pleasure to stop and study its beauty and information !!

k@ from Paris, France

I already wrote it on your other site but i repeat it here since it's a pleasure to see it again : i love your hight vantage point as much as the gorgeous mix of science-fi feel & timeless utopia, like in a futuristic novel. A piece of art crossed by a great inspiration. Something's magic in this image. How did yourself feel it ? I'd like to know. Have a very good week, HugOdear.

8 Aug 2011 8:09am

@k@: Thank you my dear! Your words always mean alot to me! Regarding my feeling, you probably won't imagine how mixed it actually has been... I admire all these architectural accomplishments, I really do! Yet, they have been built on land reclaimed from our beloved harbour, that has become more like a "river" today! I do miss the harbour I knew since I was a small boy... Just hope this pic is good enough to show the beauty of it!

k@ from Paris, France

I can understand that mixed feeling utterly, thanks for your answer that allows me to imagine now the ancient harbour below........ Even more magical.

The skyscraper in the foreground can't even fit in the photo because it is so huge....such an incredible size!
This shot encompasses so much! Wonderful shot of the city, the harbor....mountains and clouds!!!

This is almost unreal. LIke a dream. The light over the far tall building is magical and the sky worthy of any renaissance painting! It's just really beautiful, Hugo.

Très belle photo - Félicitations !!

But please, please could tell us what is the level of Photoshop "improvement" done ?
Any possibility of seeing the original - untouched ?

22 Oct 2011 6:11pm

@Pierre: Thank you for the kind words! I have never been a fan of digital art and my photos are mildly "touched"... here's the "untouched original".

Pierre from Lyon, France

Thank-you for sharing !
That is very helpful to understand how you have taken such a great picture.
I can see that you were at the right time, the right spot, with the right camera settings !
Looking at both pictures side by side I can also see how a little bit of "photoshop work" improved the
"breath-taking" effect !
One can do so much with photoshop that tend to be suspicious ! Especially for street photography where from my point of view it should improved the least possible to match reality.
Thanks again / Pierre

Arr D from Montreal, Canada

This is a terrific urban landscape! The two towers echoing each other makes the distance tangible. Although it is a spectacular place that lends itself to a good picture, your approach makes it an event : well balanced contrasts; just enough natural colors; and a great depth of field.
I enjoyed looking at the two versions (before and after touch-ups).
Enough talking : I want to browse some more !
