"(床位) bed space for rent"

Posted by hugo poon (hong kong, Hong Kong) on 29 March 2012 in Documentary & Street and Portfolio.

I recently read that Hong Kong was in fact the most expensive city in the world to rent a three-bedroom apartment (here).

Wanchai Road, Hong Kong.

I do not regard myself as a photographer. I'm an ordinary man but extraordinarily obsessed with capturing all the memorable scenes that I encounter in my everyday life. It's like an excited traveller craving to record his memorable journey in a memorable way, but in my case, it's the journey of my life ... If I can record my encounters in such a way that they leave an image on the mind of myself and other viewers, it's a tremendous joy and some accomplishment...
In terms of photography, I'm trying to preserve the moments as my eyes see "something" and my heart feels it too. As such, I seldom feel interested in planned, arranged or manipulated photographs...

It appears that Karachi is the cheapest place to sleep...but your delicious photos of Hong Kong really make it seem that the high rent might be worth it...at least for a short visit. A wonderful shot, Hugo.

You have a great eye for focusing on these little but significant details of your city way of life.
This is a kind of picture I certainly would have love to make.

Your focus makes us think. Of all those who sleep in the streets and of all those who can't afford those prices. I like the focus almost in mono and the colorful bokeh of your clever dof with so many details, rich of people walking and the old lady along with the one holding her forehead seem to comment your caption & join you in your astonishment. Have a superb end of week, dear Hugo*

I like the dramatic impact of this image, Hugo - the rent sign is a most striking allegory for the rent crisis - and even the vertical handwriting is symbolic of the high-rise structure of modern cities. Beautiful depth of field as well with the teeming crowd overseen by the advertising images.

US$11,813 per month ? I'm guessing the apartment does not overlook this street . . .

And yet, I cannot help but be drawn to the man with the walking stick - no doubt he cannot afford these luxury apartments.
Your focus in this shot just calls us to look deeper.

High at the top end but worth it, I'm sure. Having just been in Singapore, I don't think Hong Kong is more expensive overall. Everything in Singapore is expensive except food at their wonderful "hawker centers".

Good image making is about seeing sometimes the ordinary and combining elements to make the extraordinary , this fits the bill.

You have a great city as material to work with Hugo! You make your point clear with the excellent selective focus on the advertisement. And I find fascinating the background with its hubbub of activity and graphics :^)

This is a photograph with so many layers that adequately depict the layers of life in your city. I'm wondering what those letters above the numbers say/ mean.

So much to see here, and I like that. I like your focal point and thank you for the translation. I also clicked on the link...good lord! I can't believe those prices. I thought it was bad here, but apparently not in comparison.
