"going home..."

Peel Street, Hong Kong

... to some, it's one of the last remaining "street markets" in HK, and to others, it's where they just come for foods whether it be traditional or trendy; to some, it's a fascinating mix of cultures but to others, it's the invasion of the old way of living by some pretentious bourgeois... To me, it's a street I have to pass by at least once a week but never seem to be able finishing photographing.:-) More pics: http://www.pbase.com/hpicckcy/peel_street

I do not regard myself as a photographer. I'm an ordinary man but extraordinarily obsessed with capturing all the memorable scenes that I encounter in my everyday life. It's like an excited traveller craving to record his memorable journey in a memorable way, but in my case, it's the journey of my life ... If I can record my encounters in such a way that they leave an image on the mind of myself and other viewers, it's a tremendous joy and some accomplishment...
In terms of photography, I'm trying to preserve the moments as my eyes see "something" and my heart feels it too. As such, I seldom feel interested in planned, arranged or manipulated photographs...

Stephen Phillips from San Francisco, United States

Hugo - here is a solid, dramatic, perfectly realized night shot. It would be a good image of a deserted street - but that lone figure adds mystery - complexity - and begs human interest. Very, very good.

I'm with Stephen, the solitary person walking down the street add such poignancy and drama to this photo.

Hugo, you are a great craftsman and I would like to believe, very patient...I have an image in my mind of you waiting hours in this deserted street for someone to walk along the centre of the road and give you a perfect shot!

Now.. what comes to mind, a hot humid night in a street full of exotic aromas and sounds from the local eat house. Or maybe something from Blade Runner..? I like the first idea best, and it's probably closer to reality. An excellent scene Hugo, you have captured the feeling of this place perfectly.

@Observing: It's most gratifying when I find my pics are inspiring viewers' imagination! Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me. They really mean alot...

wow a perfect cross roads -- an old street tied to older, historically cultural times and the new ideas, technology and attitudes of today and tomorrow... brilliant! love the lonliness present here, the closed up shops, the semi lit darkness, the complete stillness of a place that boils with activity during the day and evening... loved your well thought out and beautifully expressed contrasting descriptions too! a marvelous capture and presentation! bravo!

12 Jul 2008 6:22pm

@dj.tigersprout: Your exactly right... this is the street where the old meets the new, the traditional meets the trendy, the east meets the west... and the atmosphere gets even stronger at night. Regarding the loneliness here, I must be frank. It won't be short of lonely people trudging home especially at late hours; very often, I'm one of them... Thanks again for looking into my pic and leaving your wonderful words!
