yummy... (my neighbourhood III)

Talking about small food shops yesterday, here's one of the Cantonese people's favourites - BBQ meat; and this traditional small shop is one of the most popular in the district...:-)

'Photographers deal in things which are continually vanishing and when they have vanished there is no contrivance on earth which can make them come back again.' Henri Cartier Bresson

Maybe it's this quote that has impacted me most and given me the strongest drive since I took up photography a few years ago; maybe it's most regrettable when your most "familiar" place and people suddenly went away and you realized that you don't even have a good picture to bring back the memories... This is a little series of my neighbourhoood.

I do not regard myself as a photographer. I'm an ordinary man but extraordinarily obsessed with capturing all the memorable scenes that I encounter in my everyday life. It's like an excited traveller craving to record his memorable journey in a memorable way, but in my case, it's the journey of my life ... If I can record my encounters in such a way that they leave an image on the mind of myself and other viewers, it's a tremendous joy and some accomplishment...
In terms of photography, I'm trying to preserve the moments as my eyes see "something" and my heart feels it too. As such, I seldom feel interested in planned, arranged or manipulated photographs...

ok - admittedly i am not so much into meat... especially when i see it displayed like this. however :) i am sure it would be delicious as long as someone just broke me in... then the flavor and taste would overcome the imagery and i would be fine! :P wonderful shot -- i might even be salivating!

Again! Beautifully done, Hugo. Bravo. And again under difficult lighting - you managed to get perfect tonality on you subject. very nice.

MMmm... spicy chinese chicken, I'm hungry. Good, well balanced shot Hugo, makes me feel that I'm standing right there.

I like the photograph very much, having lived near the Chinese district in Toronto where there were many shops like this. It brings back memories of wonderful aromas.

Unlike Michael I didn't live near a Chinese district, I lived at one hour distance (by jet-foil) from this neighbourhood. So familiar this is, the image and the aromas it reminds me.

I like this one as much as the one you show yesterday.
Nice light and colors, the scene and the man shopping make a good documentary photo.

Beautiful! We have a large Asian community here in Houston, and the stores are wonderful with the meat sections just like this! I can almost taste crispy duck skin and the juicy feet...
