I do not regard myself as a photographer. I'm an ordinary man but extraordinarily obsessed with capturing all the memorable scenes that I encounter in my everyday life. It's like an excited traveller craving to record his memorable journey in a memorable way, but in my case, it's the journey of my life ... If I can record my encounters in such a way that they leave an image on the mind of myself and other viewers, it's a tremendous joy and some accomplishment...
In terms of photography, I'm trying to preserve the moments as my eyes see "something" and my heart feels it too. As such, I seldom feel interested in planned, arranged or manipulated photographs...

Take a bow Hugo! I am speechless at the brilliant composition, light, tone and above all, the pathos of this great image! The loneliness of the man with just a little bird for company against the backdrop of the distant city is simply heart wrenching! This goes to my favorite collection at VFXY right away!

Every now and again I see a photo which makes me smile and snigger with joy. That little bird elevates what is otherwise a very nice photo into that special category. Must be one of my all time faves of yours. You and Ian on top form today - must check the other Ian to see if its a perfect day.

Masterpiece ! Elegance, simplicity, great compo, beautiful background, cute foreground, moving posture of the subject, heavy frame for a very light lil'bird and mist - did I have to repeat it ? Ok... Masterpiece ! ;/

Well Hugo.....what can I say!

Like Pavan I feel speechless. Makes me feel like just giving up.

If I ever take a photo as good as this I think I'll die happy.

Fantastic capture Hugo! : ) You're 'models' really do come in all shapes and sizes! : )
Did you try cropping the roof area off at all? As it tends to draw your eye a little bit (and would allow for a less narrow crop). Just a thought, but otherwise an excellent photo!

5 Jun 2009 11:09am

@Ian Smith: Thank you my dear!!! Regarding cropping off the roof, I had exactly the same thought as yours and did give it a try... but the version with the roof seems to be just a little more "balanced". Without the bird in the foreground, it'll be a different story though... So, hope you'll enjoy the next pic!:-)))

Anna.C from LA ROCHELLE, France

another great shot Hugo ! I love the framing and the composition, beautiful background of the city in the mist and this little bird the only friend of solitude of the man.. love the position of this man lost in his thoughts, a really moving image !

Hugo, this is amazing! So heartfelt and the framing is just perfect. One can feel the weight of the world on his shoulders...the bird in the foreground is symbolic.
I just love this, your capture of his mood and the light. Bravo!

Ooh love the natural framing here Hugo, with the subject's statuesque poise and the city magnificently displayed. The delicate little bird tops it off. A charming capture with a classic feel and beautiful b&w.
