the overwhelming crowds...

Posted by
hugo poon (hong kong, Hong Kong) on 27 December 2009 in Documentary & Street and Portfolio.

One year has flied by - it's like yesterday when I visited this drinking and entertainment street last Christmas but was only drawn to the mood of solitude ( this year it was some overwhelming crowds greeting me!:-)

X'mas Eve, Lan Kwai Fong (LKF), Central, Hong Kong

A couple of fun shots taken on X'mas Eve...

FUJIFILM FinePix F200EXR 1/10 second F/3.3 ISO 200 7 mm

I do not regard myself as a photographer. I'm an ordinary man but extraordinarily obsessed with capturing all the memorable scenes that I encounter in my everyday life. It's like an excited traveller craving to record his memorable journey in a memorable way, but in my case, it's the journey of my life ... If I can record my encounters in such a way that they leave an image on the mind of myself and other viewers, it's a tremendous joy and some accomplishment...
In terms of photography, I'm trying to preserve the moments as my eyes see "something" and my heart feels it too. As such, I seldom feel interested in planned, arranged or manipulated photographs...

Oh Hugo, not only a superb monochrome (my fav, monochrome with a hint of sepia) but a superb POV added to a genius crowded scene and that detail of the selective color upon the photographer, like an echo & a wink (game-like) within the image ! Witty you*
And cool we can compare with the other image I remember well !
The motion blur adds mood and even music to the scene : I can hear your wonderfully busy festive image.

This is a fantastic capture Hugo! It reminds me of the first time I arrived in Hong Kong all those moons ago - venturing out of the hotel in the centre of Kowloon at 11pm (after recovering from jet-lag upon arrival), and finding the throng and thob of a million people, and the scent of sticky-pork buns... I can't wait to return!

a very interesting point of view ! and the color only on the photographer is a good idea ! alone in the crowd ! great shot !

Last year must have been a fluke. This year's shot looks more like Hong Kong to me. Were these people going to see the fireworks?

28 Dec 2009 5:28pm

@Steve Rice: Yes, you're right, the last year's wasn't like HK to me either. These people were here for the countdown event.:-) There'll be the fireworks (and another countdown) on New Year's Eve...
