"vanished..."

Posted by hugo poon (hong kong, Hong Kong) on 18 April 2010 in Documentary & Street and Portfolio.

This series is about a few shops, buildings that have already "vanished".

A local fruit stall in my neighbourhood. It seemed it could last much longer when I took this picture in October 2009.

Centre Street, Sai Ying Pun, Hong Kong

'Photographers deal in things which are continually vanishing and when they have vanished there is no contrivance on earth which can make them come back again.' Henri Cartier Bresson

It's such a regrettable thing when some "familiar" places and people are suddenly gone and only by then you realize you don't even have a good picture to bring back the memories...

I do not regard myself as a photographer. I'm an ordinary man but extraordinarily obsessed with capturing all the memorable scenes that I encounter in my everyday life. It's like an excited traveller craving to record his memorable journey in a memorable way, but in my case, it's the journey of my life ... If I can record my encounters in such a way that they leave an image on the mind of myself and other viewers, it's a tremendous joy and some accomplishment...
In terms of photography, I'm trying to preserve the moments as my eyes see "something" and my heart feels it too. As such, I seldom feel interested in planned, arranged or manipulated photographs...

Wonderful night shot of this place, and a good message with it, we should take the opportunity to try and catch all we can see around us as we never know how long they will be there

Absolutely outstanding. One of your very best; the contrast between the darkened areas and the quiet, warm light is just terrific.

A superb image of this small market. It reminds me of some small markets I shopped at while living in Japan. It's sad to see it vanish.

John Leech from Grange-over-Sands, United Kingdom

Beautiful image, lots of character and charm. Its seeing images such as this one which emphasizes why these 'documentary' type images of yours are so important. Maybe one day they will all be gone. Who knows what will take their place - but thank you for capturing so many of these scenes and showing them to us. There's a book in here.

21 Apr 2010 7:37am

@John Leech: Hey John, thank you for stopping and leaving such warm words... what wonderful encouragement they have been!

Ralph Jones from Detroit, United States

Fantastic light on this. Great concept for a series, unfortunately some of my favorite places have also vanished in recent times. Looking forward to seeing more from this series.
