龍門大酒樓 lung moon (dragon gate) restaurant... (ii)

Taking one last look at this familiar sign in one of its last evenings...

Standing on a prominent corner site on "the tram road" ( for more than six decades, this traditional restaurant (tea house) had once been a landmark of the Wanchai District... However, notwithstanding all its legendary past and that lots of people might think it deserved a better fate, its life had come to an end:

The site was sold for a "not too bad" price in July 2009;
A very "successful" last supper party was held on 30 November;
Finally, as scheduled, the entire building was bulldozed in spring 2010...

This series is about a few shops, buildings that have already "vanished".

'Photographers deal in things which are continually vanishing and when they have vanished there is no contrivance on earth which can make them come back again.' Henri Cartier Bresson

It's such a regrettable thing when some "familiar" places and people are suddenly gone and only by then you realize you don't even have a good picture to bring back the memories...

I do not regard myself as a photographer. I'm an ordinary man but extraordinarily obsessed with capturing all the memorable scenes that I encounter in my everyday life. It's like an excited traveller craving to record his memorable journey in a memorable way, but in my case, it's the journey of my life ... If I can record my encounters in such a way that they leave an image on the mind of myself and other viewers, it's a tremendous joy and some accomplishment...
In terms of photography, I'm trying to preserve the moments as my eyes see "something" and my heart feels it too. As such, I seldom feel interested in planned, arranged or manipulated photographs...

Places like that we have a special link to, and i can guess what it means to you. Harder for us to relate to, except when we do the effort to identify ourselves to the situation and then i lift my eyes to the sign and see another one, and the people i shared some happy hours with... Cool, Hugo !

Atmosphere of the beginning of evening... This neon sign indicates a restaurant... he catches the eyes through the night... Doubtless, here is a good opportunity to spend a pleasant moment.

Usually it is these iconic, old places that serve up the best food...We are losing them everyday, all over..Many Chinese, Iranian and other wonderful eateries have fallen to the invasion of the big Mac's and KFC's! Sad but change cannot be resisted even when it is undesirable! Your lovely image stirs up emotions that are so universal in all of our age and generation Hugo! Great sensitivity in your wonderful work Buddy:)
