"the joyous meat lovers"

"Gage Street and one last Street Market"... (ii)

Opposite to this store is an another butcher who seemingly worships both the "win-win" philosophy and Chariman Mao (I have no clue at all how these two can come together): http://www.pbase.com/hpicckcy/image/129350758

Gage Street, Central, Hong Kong

I do not regard myself as a photographer. I'm an ordinary man but extraordinarily obsessed with capturing all the memorable scenes that I encounter in my everyday life. It's like an excited traveller craving to record his memorable journey in a memorable way, but in my case, it's the journey of my life ... If I can record my encounters in such a way that they leave an image on the mind of myself and other viewers, it's a tremendous joy and some accomplishment...
In terms of photography, I'm trying to preserve the moments as my eyes see "something" and my heart feels it too. As such, I seldom feel interested in planned, arranged or manipulated photographs...

Great street shot. I have to admit to not seeing meat hung this way (at least not out in the open) and it's rather interesting, but not at all appealing for my stomach ;-)
A very cool shot Hugo!

The red crossed by light is shining the most surprising way ! I like the whole scene, so full of contradiction and the wide generous smile of that butcher (i photographed one, no open-face at all ;) This compo is again a beautiful painting-like one, Hugo. Have a very nice week, my dear (my stomach prefers fish, hung or not ;)

@k@: Hey, k@, please forgive me if my pic is irritating your stomach... but I just can't help showing you another fun shot: http://www.pbase.com/hpicckcy/image/129350758

Ian Smith from London, United Kingdom

Excellent capture Hugo! But I can't quite help thinking there's something quite surreal about this, kind of like a modern art portrait - all the element work together, but they should'nt really be there? :-)

@Ian Smith: Thanks so much Ian!:-)

Punit from Somewhere in, India

The contrast of this capture, for me, shows how - when we do our jobs for years and years - they become so much of a routine - we dont take things to heart (and to minds in some cases) and just go through our routines..!

Nice street capture.

@Punit: How true! That's why I'm always drawn to some traditional local stores - they're alot more "human".

António Pires from Lisbon, Portugal

Wonderful scene.

Great street scene, somehow cannot see Tesco changing the way they sell their meat though.

Wow, Hugo, that is magical! I love the light you captured here. It just glows in this fantastic way between day light and night light. There seems to be filtered day light coming from above and then the fluorescent bulbs in the store just sear in this fabulous way. The store itself is fantastic and I love the smiling figures. And... your title is excellent to go with it. :)

@Bettina: Thank you Bettina!!! The image did come out well, even better than I could have expected especially from a pocketable compact. Yes, this is a lovely store - one of my wife's favs as well!:-)

John Leech from Grange-over-Sands, United Kingdom

Your wonderful mix - the Art of Documentary.

Did Lady Gaga go there to buy her dress?! Ha ha...

Stephen Phillips from San Francisco, United States

Yes. The first thought was how rarely these small shop owners seem to smile - and here between the cuts of raw meat - open laughter among those assembled. Joy! Light! And a celebratory Hugo capture. Nice.

larans from Lund, Sweden

A really good shot. Makes me happy and smiling despite the somewhat strange way (for me) to treat the meat.

Steve Rice from Olympia, United States

Maybe that other butcher is just covering all the bases so he can keep winning. A nice shot of these happy fellows.

Pavan Kaul from Mumbai, India

A fabulous street capture Hugo! The light, detail, colors and expression are all superbly captured! Fabulous:)

Great smiles on their faces.

The balance of the figures in this photo are almost like classical painting. Superbly done, with a sharp eye and a fast shutter finger.
