"13"

hugo poon (hong kong, Hong Kong) on 13 February 2012 in Abstract & Conceptual and Portfolio.

Here's the Larger view.

"Apart from "13", there must be other numbers." I thought... And yes, there're. What I've found so far:

"9"

"10"

"11"

"12"

Bonham Road, Sai Ying Pun, Hong Kong

I do not regard myself as a photographer. I'm an ordinary man but extraordinarily obsessed with capturing all the memorable scenes that I encounter in my everyday life. It's like an excited traveller craving to record his memorable journey in a memorable way, but in my case, it's the journey of my life ... If I can record my encounters in such a way that they leave an image on the mind of myself and other viewers, it's a tremendous joy and some accomplishment...
In terms of photography, I'm trying to preserve the moments as my eyes see "something" and my heart feels it too. As such, I seldom feel interested in planned, arranged or manipulated photographs...

DULCIE from Danville, CA, United States

A mysterious shot with the numbers included near the roots of the tree...Let us know when you find out the reason for the numbers. I like their graphic, symbolic quality. Nice mystery.

Gérard Beullac from Paris, France

Very strange.
Did you elucidate that mystery?

@Gérard Beullac: Do read Steve's comments below.:-)

Z from Shanghai, China

I like the mood created by emphasizing the green .. it's mysterious, and generates lot of imaginations !

Ian Smith from London, United Kingdom

This is a great series Hugo. The roots in some of your shots appear like intertwined human body's - almost like HR Giger sculptures!! I wonder what the number's mean? Great stuff my friend!

13 Feb 2012 9:11am

@Ian Smith: Thanks again Ian for mentioning HR Giger works!! Regarding the "numbers", my guess is they're actually some land survey checkpoints. Do read Steve's comments below.:-)

Mysterious... and deep (forest). Seems full of symbolism.
13 means a lot for some. You have a great collection now.
There is some zen mood too here. Wood, green, a number. A peaceful enigma.
And now a peaceful week for you, HugO-^

@k@: This is another look at these roots... I'm mesmerised!:-) Take care!

Francisco Romero from Carbajal de la Legua, Spain

Somber mood created by the monochrome rendition of the root embracing the rock in the search for soil. Then, this wonderful green creates a magnificent composition. Superb, Hugo.

I think these are surveyors marks so that any shifting of the stabilized hillside can be quickly determined and corrected. I think officials in Hong Kong are on top of issues that in other places are only known about when the hillside slides down and buries a few houses like in Seattle, for example.

If the explanation is more mysterious, please let us know. Cool shot, Hugo.

13 Feb 2012 10:17pm

@Steve Rice: Thank you Steve! I'm with you - these are actually found on a retaining wall (of a potentially dangerous slope), and I notice land surveryors working in the area pretty frequently.

Ralph Jones from Detroit, United States

Excellent processing!

Oh no, I think you and Steve are too practically minded. Where is your romance...? Surely these are symbolic messages left by wise and ancient tribes, indicating some secret revelation about the meaning of life. ;-)

After many years working with surveyors, I, too, was told about the dull art of verifying stability. Now, reading Dulcie's revelations, I see a whole different meaning to Existence !

In some circles, 13 can be an unlucky number, which in this image seems appropriate with the ominous tree root looking much like a large claw. This is such an engaging and thought provoking image Hugo :^) Wonderful find!

Evelyne Dubos from Le Mans, France

Nice and unusual composition with this enigmatic N° 13. Like how the delicate greenery pops up on the rock.
