"mr beef seafood restaurant" & "pak lee hotel"

Posted by
hugo poon (hong kong, Hong Kong) on 21 June 2012 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

An old sign and a local (hourly) hotel... Another glimpse of Mongkok.

A couple more:

"an old street corner"

"an urban renewal effort"

One late Afternoon, Shantung Street, Mongkok, Hong Kong

Mongkok, in Chinese, means the "busy and prosperous corner". 'It's characterized by a mixture of old and new multi-story buildings and according to Guinness World Records, Mong Kok has the highest population density in the world (130,000 per km2).' Wikipedia

I do not regard myself as a photographer. I'm an ordinary man but extraordinarily obsessed with capturing all the memorable scenes that I encounter in my everyday life. It's like an excited traveller craving to record his memorable journey in a memorable way, but in my case, it's the journey of my life ... If I can record my encounters in such a way that they leave an image on the mind of myself and other viewers, it's a tremendous joy and some accomplishment...
In terms of photography, I'm trying to preserve the moments as my eyes see "something" and my heart feels it too. As such, I seldom feel interested in planned, arranged or manipulated photographs...

The mood is so pregnant here, decay one with depth of colors and time work. Mr Beef, seafood, that's another contrastful part of the theme you love to share, past & present first, with the fun name smiling over a building inspiring nostalgia or sadness. The beautiful tonal range evokes underwater mysteries, some Atlantis forgotten yet mythical world maybe ? Have a superb end of week, Hugo dear*

An old street corner, I love it, with this violent and antagonist artwork of the DJ Flower street poster.
I love this building here, with the irruption of this sign in bad wealth foreground. When a city is turning to a museum where most of buildings are maintained and clean, the tracks of the times are almost invisible. Here, the city is showcasing this tracks with some brutality. That's not bad.

The dilapidated state offers an atmosphere of decadence that makes me think of sets of the film "Blade Runner"!

Ian Smith from London, United Kingdom

It's places like this that make Mongkok such a photographic haven. The dated facade's hold such character in different guises by day and night. I love your cropped framing Hugo.

@Ian Smith: Thanks Ian! Don't know why, these corner buildings are always a special attraction to me!

mo.langel from Courtelary, Switzerland

An old building so typical as we still meet in the streets of Hong-Kong! Interesting capture! Have a nice end of week Hugo! :)

That old, moldy look is the way I remember Mongkok. Such a great capture of this place. Also, I enjoy the flower market and the goldfish of Tung Choi Street.

@Steve Rice: The goldfish street! Yes, must pay a visit next time! Thanks Steve!:-)

I can only guess at the sounds and smells and atmosphere of this run down part of town. No doubt it has its own culture and rules, nonetheless it is a great place to get those shots with impact. Very nice Hugo.

@Michael Fresh: "No doubt it has its own culture and rules." You're exactly right Mike... but I must say I never feel at home here.:-(

A wonderful taste of local color. A wonderful mood. The shabby details are mesmerizing...I'm just sitting at my screen imaging the life going on here. Love that you bring these experiences to me. Thank You.

Palpable atmosphere of an old place still managing to keep its head above water. I love the mixture of grungy texture and decaying colour.

Yes, excellent mood and tone Hugo. There is something here that reminds me of a scene from Blade Runner, a very cool atmospheric movie if you ever get a chance to see it.

The building looks old. It looks like it has been abandoned for years. They should've at least repainted it.
