PS. "Walla-walla" is the nickname for this kind of motorboat (noisy engine), somewhat rarely heard these days. Once a very popular (economical) means of transport plying busily between the two sides of the Harbour. I can still remember that thrill to get onto one when I was a small boy!:-)

I do not regard myself as a photographer. I'm an ordinary man but extraordinarily obsessed with capturing all the memorable scenes that I encounter in my everyday life. It's like an excited traveller craving to record his memorable journey in a memorable way, but in my case, it's the journey of my life ... If I can record my encounters in such a way that they leave an image on the mind of myself and other viewers, it's a tremendous joy and some accomplishment...
In terms of photography, I'm trying to preserve the moments as my eyes see "something" and my heart feels it too. As such, I seldom feel interested in planned, arranged or manipulated photographs...

Very beautiful photo with a good frame

What an atmosphere, Hugo... The background, with its softness, catches my eye first, then all the mess yet an organized one, and the colors of the boats. And of course, hidden & so visible with your words, the little boy in the womb of the Walla-walla. A silence can be heard and in its heart, the heart of Lil' Hugo smiling at the photographer. Love your story of Time*

@k@: Makes my day to read your comments my dear... "all the mess yet an organized one" this is exactly what I have been aspiring and striving to achieve! HK is such a terribly busy (messy) place yet it's extremely fascinating at the same time... "the heart of Lil' Hugo smiling at the photographer" You've made me smile k@! You know what, this wasn't the pic I planned to post, but for your yesterday's pic that reminded me to listen to my heart: 'I have to post a pic of these little old and shabby boats even if they do not appeal to the others.' Thank you!:-) Have a beautiful Sunday!

I do love these almost hidden treasures of HK. When you look at old HK movies the harbour seemed to be teeming with these boats, yet today are few and far between. The B&W seems to appeal to me more - adding a timeless essence to the scene.
Have a good one Hugo!

@Ian Smith: Thank you Ian! We must pay a visit to this typhoon shelter next time you're in HK!:-) But what's really worrying me is how this place would be like when all these construction works are completed...

I'm fascinated by these floating homes. A ride on the wall-walla must be exciting indeed.

Nice shot. I like the low tech boats on the foreground, the construction cranes in the midground and the skyscrappers almost lost in fog in the distance.

What a brilliant brilliant picture Hugo! Wow! Such brilliant combination of the foreground and the backdrop of the city. Such perfect framing. Such stillness of the boats but racing away of the mind thinking and hoping for a larger balance in society n in our cities. Love this shot and thanks for your comments on mine. Cheers n hope to see you in HK someday soon :P

I love this wonderful mishmash of human innovation and invention. The great struggle to survive, trade, and make progress is all shown here.

What an interesting and cool shot Hugo. I love how the city is covered in a blanket of fog, making it mute. The foreground is like nothing I've ever seen before. For me, there is a kind of morbid curiosity, like floating coffins in the water, but not in the literal sense. So much symbolism here on the state of the economy these days. Brilliant shot!

Oh i was just coming back to look at it again and read Sharon's comment just above, absolutely my feeling too : floating coffins, like in India over the Gange river. Childhood sleeps inside, not dead - at all ;)

Fantastic atmosphere Hugo. I especially love the contrast of old and new... the jumble of old boats and the hint of modern architecture in the city looming in the distant mist. Your image is a concise statement on our quickly changing world!
