the blue house

An almost 90 year old 4-storey tenement building (唐樓, Tong Lau), with no elevators and even flushing water system. Might not appeal to many, but every time I pass by, I'll be entirely fascinated, not only by its colours, textures and architectural details, but more by its 'human' factor that was so rich. Containing memories of more than three generations, it's still serving the same purposes and functions since it was first built - housing families and chambers of local community. I was amazed to witness its being "alive", living far far beyond the normal economical and physical life of a building in this fast changing City...

Here's a little gallery if you're interested to see more.

I do not regard myself as a photographer. I'm an ordinary man but extraordinarily obsessed with capturing all the memorable scenes that I encounter in my everyday life. It's like an excited traveller craving to record his memorable journey in a memorable way, but in my case, it's the journey of my life ... If I can record my encounters in such a way that they leave an image on the mind of myself and other viewers, it's a tremendous joy and some accomplishment...
In terms of photography, I'm trying to preserve the moments as my eyes see "something" and my heart feels it too. As such, I seldom feel interested in planned, arranged or manipulated photographs...

A moving image and narrative combination here . . I feel transported to the Blue House just by looking, reading.

Nice mix of ambient and artificial lighting which the camera handles so well, particularly evident around the street lamp and the man. No chance of strange colour shifts from the sodium lamp at all at as the low sunlight casts its shadow on the wall. Impressive!
The building is almost as old as my house, and probably just as troublesome to maintain :-)

Hi Hugo,

New toy :-) Lovely images, the light and the shadow. I also love the herb tea bar picture you recently posted.

I once spent a summer learning the Hung's Style Boxing in this Kung Fu School. Time flies.

Kimberly had started WDYSOPPTW again. Please make a visit there and post some pictures as support.

@Danny: How nice to hear from you! Thanks! Yes, time really flies... I wish I could post some pics on the dpreview forum yet I seem to have forgotten how to do that! Need to figure out the technicality first! I'll drop by anyhow.:-)

I love this version best of your blue house series. The night mood, colors and solitary man walking in the glow of headlights makes this a truly special image. It seems to evoke a quieter time, distant from our glitzy fast paced contemporary existence.

Another lecture in light, Hugo. What an exquisite combination of light qualities. The series on the building is excellent.
