"Home is a place you grow up wanting to leave, and grow old wanting to get back to." (John Ed Pearce)

Ladder Street, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong

Aother quiet night, another going home.

I do not regard myself as a photographer. I'm an ordinary man but extraordinarily obsessed with capturing all the memorable scenes that I encounter in my everyday life. It's like an excited traveller craving to record his memorable journey in a memorable way, but in my case, it's the journey of my life ... If I can record my encounters in such a way that they leave an image on the mind of myself and other viewers, it's a tremendous joy and some accomplishment...
In terms of photography, I'm trying to preserve the moments as my eyes see "something" and my heart feels it too. As such, I seldom feel interested in planned, arranged or manipulated photographs...

Ol from Nice Bushes, Germany

well chosen point of focus, you (once again) beautifully captured the mood of the night! :)

You choose the perfect instant in term of light .
This man gets enough presence although his clothes are in colour harmony with the environment.
Well done !

Your sentence is so right and pertinent. The falling shoulders express so well weariness of age.

Francisco Romero from Carbajal de la Legua, Spain

The capture of this nocturnal light is as pleasing as it gets. The light on the man perfect. And if this scene is wonderful, the one in the link is superb!!

António Pires from Lisbon, Portugal

The very image of the burden of life for most people. And the older one gets the steeper the ladder of life.

Z from Shanghai, China

there is a lot of rhythm and order in this image ...

The feeling of diving into the image is quite vertiginous & fascinating here, you seem so much higher than the top of the stairs. Impressive angle & always your mastered night light. The bars on each side of the stairs repeat the ladder's feel and the square manholes shining and decreasing with the perspective add to the rhythm in this silent mood. Above all, what stops the eye to here is the age of the man who climbs up as if oh-so used despite or because of all those years since he's taking this step by step vertical path he knows so well he can sees only into his own mind while going ahead. Deep*

Karine said so beautifully and true (and her english is so much better than mine :-)...for a moment my eyes went to the left top corner...one day in my life. Oh YES. How to call it ? miracle is the only word I find out...and the joy of sharing the miracle with....everybody, this incredible tool that photography is , in our hands and eyes, and - without any rhetorics - with our hearts. Hi Hugo ! Every night like this is a good night, right ? ;-)

He seems to have climbed these steps many times in his life. No big deal, just keep climbing. I love the mood here.

Well chosen words my friend, then there are those who have never left home at all :-)
Once again you make wonderful use of the limited light at night to bring us another evocative scene of ordinary life in an extraordinary city.

Ascending - as through the years! Superb image and allegory, Hugo.

Fantastic quote to accompany your image, a perfectly symbolic image depicting the long hard climb of man through his life. Brilliant use of leading lines, and great depth of field as well, Hugo trademarks I would say.

Absolutely wonderful! All the elements in the picture from this perspective, the man, and that wonderful light!
