"design, i say..."

Posted by
hugo poon (hong kong, Hong Kong) on 3 December 2012 in Art & Design and Portfolio.

Some eye-catching letter boxes that stopped me in my tracks... Don't know much about 'design' but at least these are making the daily life less boring.:-)

Another mood here. (Hennessy Road, Wanchai)

Another letter box here. (Jardine's Bazaar, Causeway Bay)

A more classic one "cheers!" (Staunton Street, Central)

Have a great week everyone!:-)

PS. Sorry if you find the exif missing, the images over-processed and the quality a little poor... but I really lack the time (or more accurate, the energy) to do proper review and processing these days when I'm trudging back home after nine almost every night. So to keep posting, I have been using the smart phone and instagram to do the work whenever I have the chance... These said, must admit that I enjoy this new media alot more than I've expected!:-)

I do not regard myself as a photographer. I'm an ordinary man but extraordinarily obsessed with capturing all the memorable scenes that I encounter in my everyday life. It's like an excited traveller craving to record his memorable journey in a memorable way, but in my case, it's the journey of my life ... If I can record my encounters in such a way that they leave an image on the mind of myself and other viewers, it's a tremendous joy and some accomplishment...
In terms of photography, I'm trying to preserve the moments as my eyes see "something" and my heart feels it too. As such, I seldom feel interested in planned, arranged or manipulated photographs...

Gérard Beullac from Paris, France

A superb piece of ironic/sarcastic perception of life , Hugo.
Between those who leave their beer bottles wherever and those who stick their classified ads on the first come panel, the clean design seems to have to remain a wager.

@Gérard Beullac: Oh Gérard, thank you for reading into the image in such an original way! I'm touched!

k@ from Paris, France

Like a stairs for the eye, a lot to see & read in those frames , ironical for sure, thought-provocative too, and the tilt evokes the empty bottle result perfectly ;) Courage for the week that begins and it's good that you enjoy this new toy so much, lets us have you present anyways, thank U Inst. ! ;)

@k@: Your words mean alot to me! Didn't know why (neither did I think) but just felt the tilt is making this most expressive! PS. I have been doing this all the time - during lunch, on the tram, while queuing up for the bus; and plenty pics have been produced in the last couple of weeks!:-)

A green bottle is always a good indicator of something strong, but I rather liked your single glass of lager, which looked very inviting!

The Hennessy Road fog-shot is my fave in this series - you should post it direct here in case folks miss it !

Superb processing, focus, very good framing, and Gérard as said it all about the semantic contrast.

I can just wish you continue to catch these kind of images wherever you can: you're a great observer! This one is particularly interesting on many levels and the tilt effect gives great dynamism to the ensemble.

Love the way the tilt subverts the sign - which has already been colonised by other objects!

I like it Hugo ! Great framing !

Looking at your various images, it seems these letter boxes are favorite spots to park the empty bottle or full glass. I really liked the glass of beer on the rounded box. The foggy shot certainly changes the atmosphere. Each version is wonderfully executed.

Nice series, altogether. Jardine's Bazaar though is the one I like best.
I like the "sepia" feel, the bigger grain, and the DoF. I like your choice of the same subject in a similar setting ( beer bottle and passers by ).
Understand that you are busy-like-nuts with other stuff. Same with me with a new full time job. Ah, but for my art, still need an income somewhere somehow.

RORO from LE HAVRE, France

I like this "part of street" here, you focus on something that we would not see if we were walking around

Oh, but you do know design... for you it seems intuitive, as seen in your style of imagery throughout your blog. What you have can't be taught :^)
