a "top-down" study

Posted by
hugo poon (hong kong, Hong Kong) on 9 January 2013 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

As promised, I'm showing the 'whole picture' of the scene of "contemplation".:-)

Some old (but highly valuable) tenement buildings in the core of the shopping district of Causeway Bay.

Kai Chiu Road, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong

FUJIFILM XF1 1/80 second F/1.8 ISO 200 7 mm

I do not regard myself as a photographer. I'm an ordinary man but extraordinarily obsessed with capturing all the memorable scenes that I encounter in my everyday life. It's like an excited traveller craving to record his memorable journey in a memorable way, but in my case, it's the journey of my life ... If I can record my encounters in such a way that they leave an image on the mind of myself and other viewers, it's a tremendous joy and some accomplishment...
In terms of photography, I'm trying to preserve the moments as my eyes see "something" and my heart feels it too. As such, I seldom feel interested in planned, arranged or manipulated photographs...

Gérard Beullac from Paris, France

Interesting to notice the crop gave the feeling of keeping the high quality of the image.

. . ahhh . . so it is all no more than a thin gold-effect facade after all . . a wonderful visual statement, Hugo.

Oh ! Really love the three distinct sections of colors. I do not know which one I would opt for, cropped or not ? This one here is not just a parapraph, it is a chapter - contextualised. The retreat upon the rooftop is more understandable when we see the crowd underneath. Yet with the other version, the shared solitude - the intimacy - was more precise, and I felt more of an priviledged intruder, too.
They should be displayed side by side. They are both very valuable.

@Arr Day: How we feel alike but you're expressing your feelings in such beautiful words! I'm touched! Thanks so much Arr!

Excellent framing and bottom oblique.

Francisco Romero from Carbajal de la Legua, Spain

The roof seems to isolate them from the street's frenzies while enabling them to see it from the distance. Superb framing that combines a warm light for the action and a colder one for the calmly height. The ambiance transmitted is magnificent.

I see a room for rent. Long may these buildings stand. A truly great image, Hugo. I love the slices of life, in dynamic Hong Kong, that you show us. Each one holds a powerful fascination for me.

Love this view. What lens? I am envious knowing you will probably get a x100s to play with soon.

10 Jan 2013 4:33am

@morgan: It was actually taken with a really tiny camera: "an x'mas present for my daughter". X100s? Yes, soon... I hope.:-) Thanks Morgan!

Shaahin Bahremand from Tehran, Iran

wow ! I like these styles !
well done

Reminds me so much of Stowell Street in Newcastle, even if I haven't been up on the car park at night :-)
The camera is so impressive with its metering and colour rendition.

Brilliant use of the vertical format... I really love the separation of image segments, of the busy street from the quiet roof top, the way the warm light gives way to cool. Excellent image Hugo!
