Another fun shot of this street corner: "?"

And some enchanting chaos on this favourite street of mine:

Peel Street, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong

FUJIFILM X-E1 1/52 second F/2.0 ISO 1000 53 mm (35mm equiv.)

I do not regard myself as a photographer. I'm an ordinary man but extraordinarily obsessed with capturing all the memorable scenes that I encounter in my everyday life. It's like an excited traveller craving to record his memorable journey in a memorable way, but in my case, it's the journey of my life ... If I can record my encounters in such a way that they leave an image on the mind of myself and other viewers, it's a tremendous joy and some accomplishment...
In terms of photography, I'm trying to preserve the moments as my eyes see "something" and my heart feels it too. As such, I seldom feel interested in planned, arranged or manipulated photographs...

Ryan Hammond from Tucson, United States

Love it! So cinematic! Makes me feel like I'm standing there looking out from a balcony. That man looking in makes this photo grand!

Ronnie 2¢ from Atlantic Shores, United Kingdom

Your images so often exhibit this perfect control of (for most if us) impossible light . . the range here is extreme but feels never under stress. Remarkable.

13 Jan 2013 7:27am

@Ronnie 2¢: Your positive comments mean a lot to me - sometimes I find myself really obsessed with capturing the details in both highlights and shadow areas, so as to re-create what my mind's eye "sees"! Thank you my friend!

Gérard Beullac from Paris, France

You captured the perfect fraction of second, when this guy offered you (and to us too) his best profile surrounding his quite imposing silhouette.
Excellent.

k@ from Paris, France

Just love the "clean" feel in your night shot lighting here (especially where the men stand) and that billboard that is so funny & strange where it stands and shines... Yes, cinematic like all those you linked to this image, your eye is the one of a director's (i'm sure Pavan would agree ;). So there is a Soho district in HK too ? Fascinating, each day (sorry, night !) more is your way of documenting your beloved land, my friend. Be thanked, we learn a lot through your eye !
(is it your best camera now that you have tested the Fuji's ?)

13 Jan 2013 8:13am

@k@: Thank you k@! I was pretty lucky to be at the beautiful place, the lovely time and with the right tool to capture this! So glad you enjoy cause this is really one of my recent fav!:-) FYI, the so-called Soho district in HK actually refers to "the South of Hollywood Road". And yes, the X-E1 is the most versatile Fuji cam I've used and so perfect for me - small and light to be squeezed into my briefcase, and appropriately non-intrusive for street photography...

Curly from South Shields, United Kingdom

That perfect fleeting moment when a small desire or temptation grabs the subject, you certainly have mastered your timing to perfection here Hugo. Once again the smoothness of the frame impresses, at iso 1000 there isn't the slightest hint of any digital noise in the shadow areas and the camera copes with this wide dynamic range of light with consummate ease.

13 Jan 2013 8:14am

@Curly: Yes, the cam deserves much credit! FYI, my default setting with the X-E1 is Auto ISO (6400)! I don't know (or even care) what ISO the cam is choosing - all I'm concerned about is whether I can be quick enough to catch a fleeting scene like this one. Thanks!

Great mood hugo ! So cinematic again !

Z from Shanghai, China

Looks like the city is condensed in this place, more specificly, into this 'Chocoholic' sign and the man who's looking at it! A typical Hugo's city night shot ! Brilliant

Your photos are like windows opened on the night life of Hong Kong. I never get tired of looking at them.

Abena from Illinois, United States

Gorgeous feeling here! I wish I loved chocolate :/ I like that you stay true to yourself and like myself sometimes I feel I capture images to preserve them like an 'excited traveler'... that said, this is a fantastic image, it seems like your watching from a secret fantastic pov that no one else knows other than you. Brilliant! I'd also agree with António Pires there's something so clean and soft about your images, maybe the lighting, I could stare at this for ages!

13 Jan 2013 7:10pm

@Abena: Makes my day to read this! Thanks!:-)

Steve Rice from Olympia, United States

Another amazing image of life on Peel Street. All these different kinds of shops, and people, seem to belong here.

Another moment in time captured to perfection. The sign combined with woman are a powerful magnet, and then the rest of the scene is a pleasure to behold. Great balance of so many different lights.
