"reading under the new moon"

Posted by
hugo poon (hong kong, Hong Kong) on 21 January 2013 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

Another man enjoying the beauty of the night here. How I was charmed...

Yet just a few steps away, the mood was quite an interesting contrast.:-)

I do not regard myself as a photographer. I'm an ordinary man but extraordinarily obsessed with capturing all the memorable scenes that I encounter in my everyday life. It's like an excited traveller craving to record his memorable journey in a memorable way, but in my case, it's the journey of my life ... If I can record my encounters in such a way that they leave an image on the mind of myself and other viewers, it's a tremendous joy and some accomplishment...
In terms of photography, I'm trying to preserve the moments as my eyes see "something" and my heart feels it too. As such, I seldom feel interested in planned, arranged or manipulated photographs...

Valérie Simonnet from paris, France

Magnifique. Quel décor, la bonne nouvelle c'est qu'on lit encore....

What a strange feeling or unease this carries . . like we have made provision for millions but only one guy turns up.

Gérard Beullac from Paris, France

I love the "intimacy" of the scene.
Some thousands of people may read upon his shoulder.
Splendid picture.

21 Jan 2013 7:08am

@Gérard Beullac: Love how you "read" this!:-)

Curly from South Shields, United Kingdom

Stunning image Hugo, in fact a whole series of them. It must have been difficult deciding which one to post here! It must have been pretty good light anyway, at least good enough to read a traditional paper book by, but once again the camera shows its remarkable capabilities.

21 Jan 2013 8:35am

@Curly: Thanks Curly!!! I was actually test using a new wide angle (14mm or 21mm 135 equivalent); glad that these images came out fine - better than I expected!:-)

k@ from Paris, France

Tower Power ! Wow, love how it appears on my screen as i scrolled down, like an apparition in the whole black frame of the page, something emerged, full of inner light, and at the end appears the delicate figure of this night reader. Colors and light are beautiful. More, I love the idea of you hidden and present in distance and the very light Click of your Fuji catching the beauty again. Have an energetic new week, champ' !

21 Jan 2013 8:39am

@k@: I was virtually stunned by the mood of the scene... couldn't utter a sound for a while! I subsequently tiptoed to where I felt right and clicked!:-)

Christian Richer from Le Havre, France

What a great time hanging at the moon ... As usual, the colors are beautiful!

Great night capture! I like the presence of this character who reads alone on his bench in front of these impressive buildings! Have a nice week, Hugo!

António Pires from Lisbon, Portugal

A sort of anti-oasis: a bare and quiet place within a forest of buildings. Well captured mood.

21 Jan 2013 2:19pm

Evelyne Dubos from Le Mans, France

We scroll and then we discover the lonely person on the bench contrasting with the people we can imagine in this big tower. Great compo !

Basile Pesso from Paris, France

Excellent night shot with a great framing.
Possibly spotlighted.
An idea : to me, the perfect framing would be with a little less foreground. What do you think about it ?

21 Jan 2013 3:21pm

@Basile Pesso: Thanks for the kind words! Quite on the contrary, I want even more space in the foreground to convey that mood of emptiness that I was feeling!

Francisco Romero from Carbajal de la Legua, Spain

What a fantastic image! Absolutely a pleasure to behold! Superb balance of so different lights.

A wonderfrul image! It's hard to imagine just one person there even at night. I liked the other scenes with lots more people, too. Hong Kong at night can't be beat!

Hugo, your images are so thought provoking! Here I am thinking how minuscule man looks compared to such an architectural giant, yet it is man who built such a behemoth! The world is indeed an amazing place!

Abena from Illinois, United States

Oh that is brilliant ! I love how it seems like you go around in your own space and time, enjoying that silence one can have. I love the contrast in this, he sits there enjoying a part of nature's beauty and silence and right behind him lies the city life full of noise and buzzing people. What I really like as well is that the image is minimalistic a great sense of hierarchy has been created by the building and it becomes powerful because of that moon and the man. This is a really strong image. I really do get the mood, quiet and empty. Well done !

Sylvie Fondacci from Paris, France

I was there a few years ago, a great moment and such a nice memory !
Great picture with the huge tower and the tiny person reading in the loneliness of the city ...
