another long night has begun...

The Larger view

"want a dough doll?"

Sometimes, I wonder if he has holidays at all, there's not a single time I won't see him sitting there when I visit the place...

Great George Street, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong

I do not regard myself as a photographer. I'm an ordinary man but extraordinarily obsessed with capturing all the memorable scenes that I encounter in my everyday life. It's like an excited traveller craving to record his memorable journey in a memorable way, but in my case, it's the journey of my life ... If I can record my encounters in such a way that they leave an image on the mind of myself and other viewers, it's a tremendous joy and some accomplishment...
In terms of photography, I'm trying to preserve the moments as my eyes see "something" and my heart feels it too. As such, I seldom feel interested in planned, arranged or manipulated photographs...

Gérard Beullac from Paris, France

Holidays is a strange and virtual word for a lot of people, like him, whose bread job is people on ... holidays.
Stuck between the two barriers regulating the human stream, your picture is speaking very well of his position in the society.

Lai Chan See from Singapore, Singapore

Excellent street photography. That figure he is holding looks like those dough figurines we used to play with as kids.

k@ from Paris, France

Those red bars, like playing fields for kids, seems to isolate him in his whole. He's the only one whole, by the way when the others are all decapitated by your framing. He belongs to this narrow place. He can't move. This is where he LIVES and sells tiny stuff (i wonder if some stop by & buy some). Really touching observation where others would have walk by not noticing, their head cut off empty ;)

@k@: Oh k@, thanks again for feeling exactly how I felt, watching his sculpture like figure behind those red bars and amidst a sea of joyous shopping crowd...

David from Avranches, France

Great shot Hugo, looks like a long night indeed.

Great shot Hugo. I envy you getting all these new Fujis all the time.

27 Jul 2013 8:01am

@morgan: Both pleasure and pressure my friend! Quite a wonderful privilege to be able to play with the newest (pre-production and even prototype) models yet also feeling tense sometimes worrying if I could get the shots that really do them justice. These said, not all Fujis appeal to me... I still recall how one model was such a disappointment that I politely returned it after only one day's test use.:-)

Damien from Plérin, France

Great street shot. Balance of forms ans colors.

Elaine Hancock from Rockville, United States

Fantastic frame with the gentleman between the red bars. He looks like he has a lot of dough dolls. I love how you only showed the lower half of the people walking by. It just emphasizes how he is ignored.

Steve Rice from Olympia, United States

Maybe this is his idea of a good time. People watching and making a little money, too. A super capture, Hugo.

Abena from Illinois, United States

The image is beautiful Hugo, as usual I like the tranquil feel in it and how colorful it is. You remind me of a place I took an image of back in Lesotho http://abena.aminus3.com/image/2012-09-06.html. I used to see the man there everyday, more than 10yrs, still there and I see that that is his life. Superb image!

Stephen from Canberra, Australia

Excellent colour and composition - I like how the red rails frame our view.

29 Jul 2013 7:21am

Curly from South Shields, United Kingdom

I'm viewing this picture just wanting someone to stop and buy something from him Hugo.
Capturing his profile was a master stroke, giving a suggestion of anxiety rather than a head on illustration.

Ian Bramham from Manchester, United Kingdom

wonderful composition Hugo. Your photo islolates and frames the subject beautifully!

29 Jul 2013 10:10am

Kyu from Kyoto, Japan

Wonderful framing. Your shot is telling a story about him well without any narration. Superb documentary shot.

29 Jul 2013 1:19pm

Mowgli from Nice, France

A heartbreaking picture of solitude, although accentuated by the framing, with this small space between the barrier and the whole mass of anonymous agitated background. A photo that reminds me to "Eleanor Rigby" by the Beatles of "All the lonely people / Where do they all come from / All the lonely people / Where do they all belong?"

29 Jul 2013 6:21pm

Shaahin Bahremand from Tehran, Iran

excellent work

A lonesome sight and a lot of passers by not even seeing him, thanks for sharing Hugo!
